BUDDHIST MONK DOFUKU MASTER OF THE WAY OF TEA ROBE The dôfuku is a knee-length (the ko-dôfuku) or ankle-length garment. It is made of medium weight silk. The dôfuku was the leisure garment of lay monastics and other men who have functionally retired from worldly cares to devote themselves to spiritual or artistic matters. Sometimes, a kesa is worn over the dofuku. By the early Edo period, the dôfuku had become the virtual uniform of tea masters (as masters of the "Way" of Tea), artisans, and haiku poets. The garment has a label that says the robe was made in Kyoto. It is lined. The skirt is pleated allowing for an easy stride while walking. The monks robe is in good condition.
