Fine Japanese Kimono

PRE WWII CHIRIMEN MURASAKI MONTSUKI WITH FREE HAND YUZEN AND MON

The silk for this formal kimono is called chirimen. It is a kind of crepe silk. The murasaki (purple) silk is decorated in a pattern of large chrysanthemums and square dots. The elaborate decoration on the hem is presented in yuzen. The design is augmented by gold lacquered thread embroidery. The hem is ornately painted in rich colors. The monsuki is a traditional wedding gown of the era. After the wedding the monsuki’s sleeves were shortened. Then the altered gown became a tomesode and could be worn after the wedding. It was however reserved for formal dress occasions only. The family crest is a paulownia motif. The montsuki/tomesode is fully lined. The bodice is lined in scarlet silk and the hem is self lined. It is in remarkable condition for its age. 48 x 57 sleeves 26.5
