PRE WW II MONTSUKI WITH FREE HAND YUZEN FLOWER BOATS AND CHRYSANTHEMUMS ON WATER

The silk for this formal kimono is lightweight and antique soft. The hem is hand painted yuzen in a motif of flower boats, pine boughs and water symbols. According to an ancient Japanese legend, there is a magical place known as the Sweet River Valley. All the inhabitants of this land live to a ripe old age after drinking river water into which chrysanthemum blossoms have fallen. The monsuki is recognized by the mirror image on the skirt. This formal black silk kimono was a traditional wedding gown. Typically the sleeves were shortened after the wedding. The shorter sleeve made the kimono a tomesode. However this lovely wedding gown has been preserved with all its lengths intact. The hem’s design is augmented by embroidery. The gown has five family crests in the bellflower motif. The montsuki is fully lined. The kimono has some stains but generallyis in good condition. 48 x 59 sleeves 22
